Writer gone director Julia Leigh’s “Sleeping Beauty” is one of the crown jewels of this year’s Cannes film festival. It should be said that this is not a film for everyone, having said that it should also be said that everything about this peculiar film appeals to my peculiar taste! First of all Jane Campion’s name does bring a certain credibility to the opus, her “Piano” should say it all. The clinical retro-futuristic milieu of the imagery is clearly a homage to Stanley Kubrick’s signature cinematography.
“Sleeping Beauty” feels like an Arthouse opus with nods to Pier Paolo Pasolini’s grotesque and David Lynch’s ambience. At the same time Emily Browning gets to, coincidently, repeat her morbidly doll-like character of “Sucker Punch”! There is bizarrely a lot about this trailer that sets up plot parallels to Snyder’s initially promising, but ultimately disappointing feature. Needless to say I’m looking forward to screening this “Sleeping Beauty”, hopefully she wont keep me sleepless for too long!
